This is an antique Japanese lidded box made entirely of Japanese kiri (paulownia) wood. It has a Japanese writing on this box and says Mr. Yoshikazu and Mr. Hanasaku in Bunji year (1185-1189) in May (see pictures 4 & 5). It is well made with wooden pin construction (see the last picture).Having been used lovingly and probably in storage for over 8 centuries, it still remains in very good condition. With minor restoration (see enlarged pictures) It measures 3 1/4" wide by 8 1/4" long by 2 1/4" tall ( 8 x 21 x 5.5 cm). It has a warm aged patina and whether used to store valuables or something else precious, it is a fabulous box.
