ANTIQUE JAPANESE EDO ERA (c. 1750) FUNA DANSU SHIPS CHEST - $750 - (Portland, OR)

Funa-dansu (ships chest) are some of the most collectable tansu chests in Japan. Also known as a kakesuzuri (hand carryable) tansu because of the large top handle. This ships chest is made of solid kiri (paulownia) wood. Funa-dansu were used to carry the ships logs as well as documents and money, thus the many locking drawers and doors. Kiri (paulownia) was the wood of choice for lightweight chests like this one as it was one of the lightest woods in relation to its weight. The cross cut grain on this chest made it stong and easy to carry. This chest still has its original deep two and half century old patina. This chest shows a high degree of Japanese craftsmanship in the joinery, being made with hardened hinoki peg wood construction (see last picture). The method of construction as well as all the forged iron work on this chest dates it to the mid EdoEra (c.1750). All drawer handles, hinges, and latches are made of thick forged iron with a protective coat of burnt lacquer. The swing open door latches with the use of the original lock that is currently neutralized and locks and unlocks with the use of the large button in the middle (see picture ). The top handle is still very secure and provides a convenient way to transport this chest (see picture 8). All drawers open and close smoothly. The quadruple hinged door swings open and closes easily. Overall it is all original and has a glowing patina that only two and half centuries of time and use could provide. It is still in fine original antique condition. This funatansu chest measures 13 1/2" wide by 18 1/2'' deep by 15 1/2" high ( 34 x 47 x 39 cm). A very warm accent for your home or office. Please enjoy the enlarged pictures to get a full appreciation of the fine kiri wood and its two and a half century old original patina. You'll love it, I guarantee it.........If you purchase this item and are not completely delighted with it, you may return it for a no questions asked refund within 30 days of receipt. Saile…
