Each takes 3 'C' batteries (not included) and each one has been tested and works. They are all plastic and the gold finish has worn on some of them and appears silver. These are very versatile. At their tallest, they measure 15" but each one can be adjusted down to 13" or anywhere in between. There are 3 settings, continuous on, timer or sensor.
