Nearly-Complete Set of Anthony (SBA) Dollars with Major Varieties and Proofs - $130 - (Leeds, AL)
The U.S. government came out with our first small-size non-gold dollar coin in 1979. It honored Susan B. Anthony, a pioneer in the movement for women's suffrage (the joker in me wants to say that is the right of women to suffer, but it is really their right to vote). These coins are historically significant for a couple of reasons. Aside from being our first small-size dollar coin ever produced in a material other than gold, and one of the shortest-lived US coin issues ever produced, they were also the first US coin to bear the likeness of an actual woman. They were produced in only 4 years (1979, 1980, 1981, and 1999) and issued for circulation in only 3 of those 4 years (coins of 1981 were never released into circulation and were only available from Mint Sets in that year). Like the larger Eisenhower dollars issued before them, these coins never caught on with the public either - most likely because they looked too much like, felt too much like, and were too close in size to the quarter. I personally stopped using them, after accidentally spending a few as quarters myself! Because they were not being used and were piling up at the Mints, production was stopped in 1981. After a lapse of 18 years wherein no dollar coins were produced, Congress ordered the creation of a new dollar coin to honor Native Americans. Since the Mints could not design and produce new coins in time to meet the ordered production date, the Anthony design was resurrected and produced one final time in 1999. As with the circulation-strike (aka 'business strike') coins of 1981, Proof versions of these coins were only available via direct purchase from the Mint each year. The Proof coins of 1979 to 1981 were included in the regular Proof Sets sold to collectors each year, while the Proof coins of 1999 were NOT included in the Proof Sets and had to be ordered separately. They came in their own small box. This listing is for the pictured nearly-complete set Susan B. Anthony (SBA) dollar coins in
