Lovely Circa 1590 Antique Map "Pontus Euxinus (The Black Sea)" This captivating hand-colored, copperplate engraved map by Abraham Ortelius was printed in 1590. It depicts the Black Sea and surrounding areas. The map is titled "Pontus Euxinus [The Black Sea]." Full margins. Italian text on verso. Over 425 years old! Prepared by Ortelius after Mercator, and additional ancient sources as Plinius, Ovidius, Strabo, Apollonius, Procopius, and Apppianus. This map belongs to a series of historical maps known as the Parergon Theatri which appeared from 1579 onwards, sometimes as a separate publication and sometimes incorporated in the Theatrum. Mat burn & light toning, verso moderately toned, a few chips in margins, closed tear at upper left just touching body of map, old tape remnants at verso edges. Paper becoming brittle.
