Thus did these recipes first appear under Sara Bosse's name alone in Harper's Bazaar and the Ladies' Home Journal from January to October, 1913. Only when the work appeared in book form did Watanna's name appear with the insinuation being that she provided the Japanese recipes in the collection. As can be imagined, the sisters' work consists mostly of ersatz authenticity. As Watanna's biographer Diana Birchall wrote: "In truth, Winnifred's own Chinese cookery, as remembered in her Calgary home, was a byword for disaster. She boiled everything until it was inedible."
