His son encouraged him to paint for a living after a layoff in the coal mines in 1959 left Jack unemployed and unable to make a living for the first time in 40 years. Thankfully, Jack took his son's advice. His son knew an artist, Sterling Strauser, and introduced his father to the artist. Strauser liked Jack's style and vision. He offered to promote Jack's work in the art world of New York. Influenced by his son, Jack also became interested in attending art galleries and art museums. He especially liked the work of Van Gogh. Jack drew, painted, and sketched until the end of his life. He had 11 years from 1980-1991 when he was forced to give up using paints because the fumes irritated his condition of Black Lung. Jack was a true self-taught American folk art master. He died of the Black Lung Disease on Dec 5, 1991. 25 years ago.
