Antique 19C Ornate FRENCH SALON Picture Frame GILT Gold Compo Wood 11 x 13.5 - $895 - (Columbia, SC)
Here is a very beautiful antique heavy ornate picture frame. The entire frame is made of wood with very detailed compo molding decorations on the surround. The frame measures 18 1/4 x 21 ins. in total size and the back insert rabbet size (with a thin depth of the rabbet), is 11 x 13 1/2 ins. This used to house a thin artist board painting. This frame is heavy and solid, molding is 4 ins. wide and the entire depth of the frame is 3 1/2 ins.An interesting discovery I found after I took the painting out of it , is that in white is written TROYON on the back wood stretcher. Constant Troyon was a French artist who lived from 1810-1865. So this probably held one of his paintings at some point in time. The painting that was in here ( which will be listed in a separate auction) , was signed by a different artist. The frame is in good as is vintage condition with only minor in-paint touch-ups, wear to the finish, and some cracks in some compo. All common with age. This looks to have its original gilding still on here.I would date this frame to the 1850-60s time period.I also would classify this as a Museum quality picture frame. Please enlarge the pictures to look at the wonderful intricate decorations on the surround. This style of frame is perfect for a portrait, landscape, Hudson River School artwork, floral, and for mid to late 1800s decors.
