18th C FRENCH LOUIS XV PAINTED IMPORTANT TRUMEAU FROM CHATEAU DE ROCHEGUDE - $6,500 - (Atlanta, GA)
A large Louis XVI circa 1750 period Trumeau Mirror, featuring a well-painted pastoral scene aligned above the rectangular mirror plate. The frame with a gold-painted ground accented by raised gilt designs in the Neoclassical taste. The painted scene depicting a nobleman & lady in a idyllic wooded landscape, framed by a raised gilt, and surmounted by a gilt motive. The mirror plate with carved border in gilt, was replaced. This fine and very large Trumeau mirror, is French in origin. The oil painting exhibiting fine shading and color, with details in the clothing & gestures evidence of careful execution. The trumeau likely originally part of a larger custom wall section, and a good example of the merger of architecture & design. It features a unique provenance label in the back reading 'de Rochegude', as well as two torn original labels of original canvas and frame supplier. Measurements; 62 in H. x 32.5 in. W. x 1.5 D Canvas; 38 in. H x 31 in. W Glass area; 31 in. W x 19 in. H. -without frame-. Label with name 1.7 in. H x 1 in. W. The trumeau traces its origin to the Castle of Rochegude in Provence. The castle was property of the Marquis de Rochegude. Henri Paschal of Rochegude, born in 1741 was the son of François Paschal of Rochegude and Rose Combettes. He was a naval officer under the French old regime and part of a mission to India in 1768-1769 as well as the second expedition to the Kerguelen Islands in 1773. From 1776 de Rochegude was a member of the Royal Navy, and patrolled the Atlantic Ocean during the US war of independence, later commanding a mission to Santo Domingo from 1785 to 1787. At his death, the Marquis bequeathed his castle, park and library to the city of Albi. The present glorious Trumeau was acquired from a private dealer in Paris, France.
