Antique China Cabinet by California Furniture Company (N.P Cole &Co) The California Furniture Manufacturing Company (1872-1900) and its predecessor N. P. Cole & Co. were the largest and most successful furniture establishment in San Francisco during the 19th century. The quality furniture offered by the CFMCo was manufactured in Boston and Tewksbury; Massachusetts and shipped in a “knock-down” state to California where it was assembled and finished to order. This was primarily done at their headquarters at 222-226 Bush Street and for a time at San Quentin Prison, where they employed two hundred prisoners from about 1875 to 1881. From 1872-75 the firm averaged a million dollars in annual sales. Their line of furniture consisted of well-designed and constructed production furniture as well as customized furniture made on commission and for exhibition. Their manufactured furniture can be identified through a sales catalog from the company that dates from around 1877-1889.
