1968 Kollsman Altimeter Setting Barometer Complete Servicing Instruction Manual - $125 - (Oakridge, OR)
For Sale: 1968 Kollsman Altimeter Setting Barometer Complete Servicing Instruction Manual. Kollsmans have 3 things against them. There shim pivots bend easy, they self dirty themselves with oxidation and tarnish deposits in the sweep gears teeth, and their age that has effected the bellows sensitivity to small movements and making for that it can't follow accurately the full scale anymore. This is called, bellows fatigue. The only way to fight bellows fatigue is to exchange a low altitude bellows with a high altitude bellows. The bellows receives new life from this because it's flexing in a new pressure area. Of course, not a easy switch over. Out of 25 Kollsman I have received, ¾ of them have bent pivot shims. Also 100% of them glitch in the vacuum chamber testing. This means that there is tarnish deposits and oxidation in the gears teeth that hangs it up in spots. I have been told that the tarnish and oxidation comes from the different types of metals being connected to each other causing a small micro charge that causes these build ups over a long period of time. Brass is one of the worst metals for this which is what the sweep gear is made out of. This manual is something I wish I had years ago. I have had to figure out and make all kinds of fixtures and find a method for replacing the shims that is rightfully done and very accurate. For those that ask, Yes, I do make some parts and do full servicing on Kollsman Altimeter Setting Barometers.
