Shiva bronze statue india cambodia Buddha ancient rare phallic Angkor Wat - $2,000 - (Bakersfield, CA)
This is a very rare statue. I believe it is Hindu. Appears to be much like the bronzes of Angkor Wat area. I have been researching this for years, and can not come to a definitive conclusion. I received this when my uncle passed away. The statue was given to him by a Cambodian family that he helped save while an army soldier in Vietnam in 1970. I have studied the patina with various magnifications, and it appears genuine, although I'm not an expert. It has several different layers visible under magnification, and as you can see in the photos, looks like it may have been underground for quite some time and someone tried to clean off parts of the statue. Especailly noticeable on the back and a few other areas. Patina does not dissolve with water, or with rubbing alcohol, like many fake ones do (I tested it). My best guess would be the age is between 1150-1400 AD. Just a guess. Also the phalic symbol, or torch, I have not been able to find at all. Ive looked through digital archives of the New York Museum of art, the Norton Simon Museum, the Cambodian national museum, and have found nothing like it. I have found some statues that would be similar, but where this is holding the long phallic/torch item, the hands are either clasped or pointing up palm to palm. I have not even found a sketch or painting like this, and have looked through dozens of Asian art books and websites. I spent about 10 years of and on researching it. It is most similar to bronzes from Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and of the Khmer dynasty style. If you have any further information, let me know. I've had several local offers for this, so am setting buy it know price accordingly. Will also entertain any serious offers. It is about 7 inches tall, 4.25 inches wide at the waist, and weighs about 1.75 pounds.
