Carl Ray Original Painting Acrylic On Canvas, 24"x30", 1973 Cree Legend - $3,400 - (Richmond Hill, ON)
Carl Ray 1943-1978. Cree First Nations. Sandy Lake Reserve. Carl Ray apprenticed under Norval Morrisseau. In the 1970's Norval Morrisseau, Carl Ray and Josh Kakegamic were employed by the Ontario Government to teach young First Nations students the Woodland technique. Carl Ray was a prolific, highly recognized First Nations artist that died at a young age as the result of a stabbing in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. His works are very sought after by Private Collectors, Galleries and Museums. Carl depicted the Cree legends that until Morrisseau broke the taboo these were highly guarded legends to only be shared among the Cree/Ojibway clan members. The painting offered to a collector is a rare privately owned acrylic on canvas. Dimensions: 24" x 30", stretched canvas framed in a Black museum frame. Signed in Cree Syllabics, English and dated 73. I acquired this painting in 2007, and Gallery DeBoer, Owen Sound cleaned the front and back + reframed. This is a striking painting by an historical and sought after First Nations legendary artist.
