Nita K Sunderland Tomb Figure Bronze Abstract Sculpture Mid Century Modern Description: Designer: Nita K Sunderland USA - Circa 1962 Dimensions: 16" H x 20" W x 8" D Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Cast bronze sculpture on walnut base by Peoria, IL artist Nita K Sunderland. Titled "Tomb Figure" this solid bronze was cast at the Marinelli Foundry in Florence, Italy, circa 1962. The abstract sculpture of a seated woman features a truncated stylized head and is depicted as loosely wrapped or mummified. In Italy during the1960s Sunderland was intrigued by ancient caryatids and helmeted figures and in her native England she discovered medieval effigy figures on the tombs of royal and noble personages. Her sculpture figures are faceless or masked, metaphors rather than specific people. Stylized kings, queens and bishops standing guard or grouped with ruins of classically inspired columns.
