The Gnome King of Oz first edition - $160 - (East Montpelier, VT)

First edition of The Gnome King of Oz by Ruth Plumly Thompson, extending the series by L. Frank Baum. With color plates. Heavily illustrated by John R. Neill. Copyright 1927. The “Reilly & Lee” mark on the spine is in small type and without the large ampersand. Booksellers grade: very good + 282 pages. 12 color plates. The front cover is a color plate pasted to the cloth-covered board. Very, very minor scuffing. No edge chips. A smudge on the base of the spine, below the publisher’s imprint. Small wear at top of spine. Overall rather good and bright, with remarkably sharp corner points. Binding is tight. Front and back endpapers still snug. Only one signature break shows a sign of parting, with a bit of buckram showing through. Interior binding still traps. Only markings are a pencil “1.50” price on the front endpaper and a pencil name and address under “this book belongs to.” All pages in fine shape. Given the acidity of the paper, the book is in remarkable condition, with no yellowing. This copy was handled with exceptional care and stored carefully for all its years. The 271st of the Oz books. First edition market price is $400. Offered here with a starting auction price over 60% below market.
