Cowardly Lion of Oz early edition with color plates - $150 - (East Montpelier, VT)

An early edition of The Cowardly Lion of Oz by Ruth Plumly Thompson, with color plates. Heavily illustrated by John R. Neill. Copyright 1923. The “Reilly & Lee” mark on the spine is in large, bold type but has the ‘small E’ ampersand instead of the curled ampersand of a first edition. Booksellers grade: good+ Some defects but pages pristine. 292 pages. 12 color plates. The front cover is a color plate pasted to the cloth-covered board. Shows some scuffing in black area that reveals texture of cloth below, plus a few chips on the edges, but overall rather good and bright. Binding is loose, and outer spine has tears. Front endpapers have parted but back endpapers remain snug. Interior binding is still generally good, with stitched pages holding true, but a sliver of buckram is visible at some of the signature breaks. The corner points are slightly bumped and there is some chipping. The top of the back cover shows a quarter-inch deep ripple running along the 6-1/2 inch cover. No markings on any page except a pencil “1.50” price on the front endpaper. All pages in fine shape. Given the acidity of the paper, the book is in remarkable condition, with no yellowing. This copy was handled with exceptional care and stored carefully for all its years. The only serious defect are the tears along the front spine. The 17th book in the Oz series created by L. Frank Baum; the third book written by his successor Ruth Plumly Thompson. Booksellers market price of $500. Offered here at more than 60% off.
