British Mini Coin Set 4 Farthing Coins Great Britain - Excellent There are four coins included with this offering: Halfpenny Penny Three Pence Six Pence As you can see, this set is in excellent condition. In 1971 Great Britain changed its money from a system which dated back to the Middle Ages to the decimal system which we use today. In the change-over the value of the pound remained the same. Today it is made up of 100 pence (p). In the old system, however, the pound was divided into 20 shillings and each shilling split into 12 pennies. The Pennies themselves were divided into halfpennies and farthings (quarter of a penny). Other common coins were the threepenny bit, the sixpence, florin (two shillings) and half-corwn (two shillings and six pence). SIX PENCE - Elizabeth II - 1953 to 1967, one reverse design only The last date of issue for circulation was 1967. The sixpence continued in use for some time after decimalisation in 1971, valued at 2.5 new pence. It was especially useful for parking meters, but inflation and a lack of encouragement in its use led to it being finally demonetised at the end of June 1980. These coins are not in circulation and were replaced with the present coin system.
