Formally organized in 1938 AFCC gradually evolved from an original complement of about 300 men, providing air traffic control in the continental United States only, to a worldwide command as several 1000 men and women with a multitude of missions. During this evolution, with command also acquired the equipment and technology to make communications not only faster but also more accurate. Communications today is of the type that only science fiction writers dreamed of 50 years ago. AFCC, however, is about more than equipment; it is about people. People have always been at the heart of the Air Force Communications, whenever name the organization happen to carry. That was the way it was in 1938: that is the latest to date. A book of this nature can do little more than skim the surface of the commands past. It cannot possibly portray all of the countless persons stories and ingenuity, hard work, and sacrificed by the men and women created this command and its legacy of service.
