Vintage Iroquois China Hostess Plates by Russell Wright - $500 - (New Haven, CT)
Hard to find, four Hostess/Party Plates by the Iroquois China Company, designed by Industrial Engineer, Russell Wright. Produced between 1947 and 1967 it was named Casual, and was considered mid-century modern. The casual line was manufactured of a high-fired china, making it more resistant to chips, crazing and breakage, than any other lines before it. The base of the plate shows the manufacturers smooth dimples where it rested on prongs during the firing of the glaze. Measures approximately 10 5/8 inches in diameter by 1 inch high. They are in excellent condition, without chips, cracks, or grazing. There is a manufacturing imperfection on the base of the ripe apricot which was before the glazing. The charcoal plate does not have the back stamp making it more unusual, but the firing marks are present. The small indentation on the plate was designed for the hostess to place her thumb, as she carried the plate to her guests. Set consists of two avocado yellow plates, one charcoal plate and one ripe apricot plate. Together, they make a lovely eclectic look and a beautiful addition to any table setting.
