THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT NURSERY RHYME R. CALDECOTT CHILDRENS PICTURE BOOK 1940 - $7 - (New York, NY)
This is the famous nursery rhyme, The House that Jack Built, comically illustrated with detail by Randolph Caldecott, in the late 1800s. This book was published in the early 1900s, possibly around 1940, by the Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd., which bought the original publisher of Caldecott's works. R. Caldecott became famous for his detailed and humorous drawings in children's books (the Caldecott Medal is named after him). His abilities as an artist were promptly and generously recognised by the Royal Academy. Caldecott greatly influenced illustration of children's books during the nineteenth century. Two books illustrated by him, priced at a shilling each, were published every Christmas for eight years. He was from England; the house on the frontispiece actually still stands today and is an attraction. The drawings in this book are in color and in sepia and white. They were engraved (and printed) by Edmund Evans, who sought to keep the drawings as close to what Mr. Caldecott intended. There are illustrations on every page, which are initialed. The book is a wholesome book for young children; they will enjoy gazing at the pictures while the story is read to them. The book has some wear on the outer binding; there are a couple pages which have a small rip, but do not affect the legibility(see last photo). And there are numbers on first page; this book used to be in a library. Also, page 6-7 is missing. Thanks for your interest.
