A newly discovered and unpublished letter that has been passed down through the William Skeen, the Provost-Marshal in Alleghany County, Virginia referenced by Lee in the letter, family and is now for the first time available for sale. HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT CIVIL WAR-DATED LETTER SIGNED BY ROBERT E. LEE, NEWLY DISCOVERED AND UNPUBLISHED LETTER AVAILABLE FOR SALE FOR THE FIRST TIME Three weeks before Robert E. Lee assumed command of the Army of Northern Virginia, Confederate General Lee reports to Governor Letcher on the movements of Confederate Brigade General Henry Heth’s Army of the New River near Lewisburg, West Virginia. In addition, he notifies Letcher that the telegraphic wires between the Covington and Jackson Rivers have been moved to the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad so they can be used by General Heth at his new scene of operations to maintain communications with Richmond for military purposes. The letter reads in full: “In reply to the telegram of Provost Marshal W. Skeen of Alleghany, relative to the removal of the telegraphic wires between Covington & Jackson’s River, I have to state that this line was constructed purely for military purposes, in consideration of the Army near Lewisburg, and served the movement of Genl. Heth from that locality to the line of the Va. & Tenn. RRoad, it has become no longer necessary to the Army and the wires have been carried by Genl. Heth to the new scene of his operations, there to be devoted to the same purpose. So as to place him in rapid communication with this city.”. THREE WEEKS BEFORE ROBERT E.
