Antique Robert Turlington Bottle in Violin Shape w/ January 16, 1754 Patent - $39 - (Newtown, PA)

Robert Turlington was granted a patent by King George II for his invention of “The Balsam of Life.” Turlington’s Balsam was sold for about 150 years. He designed this violin bottle shape in 1754 to protect his balsam from piracy. His previous common utility bottle was an easy target for counterfeiters. This 2 ¾” bottle is often referred to as “Geometric Pear-Shape or Violin Shape.” The bottle is marked on all four sides “BY THE KING’S ROYAL PATENT GRANTED TO”, ROBT TURLINGTON FOR HIS VENTED BALSAM OF LIFE’, “Y JAN 16 1754”, “LONDON.” It has no cracks, there is a chip on the lip, and mineral stains on the inside.
