Vintage Glenbrook 7 1/2 Wool Newsboy Cap 6 Panel Hat Leather Sweatband Rare! - $99 - (Williamsburg, VA)

Here we have a gorgeous vintage 6 panel "newsboy" cap from Glenbrook. This nifty cap is fashioned from a very high-quality smooth & lightweight wool---reminds me of fancy suiting material. Fabric features a sort of houndstooth check pattern in blue, light brown, and pale grey. Tags & trimmings on this hat indicate it was produced sometime in the late 1950s/early 60s time frame. However, its generous cut & 6 panel styling are much more in keeping with newsboy styles of the 1920s & 30s. Back when this cap hit the shelves circa 1960, younger, fashion-forward types who came across it would have dismissed it as hopelessly old-fashioned & fuddy-duddy. Of course, it's likely Glenbrook deliberately designed this cap to be out-of-step with then-current fashions. Given its fairly expensive materials & "old-fashioned" styling, this cap was probably marketed to older, conservative gents who still favored the styles they wore in their youthful heydays, which would have spanned the 20s & 30s. This phenomenon is still pretty common today: I'm sure we all know middle-aged men who prefer the fashions from their younger days--heck, I see just such a fellow every time I look in the mirror. ;) Anyway, Glenbrook's mid-century decision to offer a cap with styling elements from earlier decades is a boon for today's hat collector, as it's become nearly impossible to find good condition examples of newsboy-style caps actually made as far back as the 20s or 30s. Decades ago, I used to run into such caps all the time, but they've become like the proverbial hen's teeth these days. This Glenbrook certainly looks like a classic "old-school" cap, and better still, it's beautifully made. It's in nice shape, too---I doubt it saw much wear. I don't see any signs of handling to the wool shell: it looks clean & unblemished. No signs of insect activity. The interior satin lining is rendered in a lovely golden color; it looks clean.
