This auction is for an extremely rare authentic 1929 Philips "Wayabout" (Way a Bout / Way About) Map of Oxford University, Oxford UNIVERSITY Colleges, Oxfordshire, England, UK. ENGLAND - OXFORD. Map Illustrator: Hoffman, G. Spencer, London by George Philip & Son. No date. Ca. 1929. Folded color map in stiff paper covers 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches. Map unfolds to approximately 16 x 20 inches. General wear to the jacket; otherwise the map of Oxford, depicting Oxfordshire and Oxford’s Colleges in MINT CONDITION! Colleges are identified by numbers referenced in a key; Churches by roman numerals and University and City Buildings by letters of the alphabet, likewise referenced in a key. In the corner of the map, above an ideogram comprised of Spencer Hoffman's initials, is the date 1929. The original price of the map printed on the front cover, one shilling & six pence. On the inside cover: "Pictorial Maps showing the way about OXFORD / Others in preparation. Size 20 x 16 inches. Obtainable as flat sheets or folded in paper covers. Price 1s. 3d. net per Map." A listing of "Maps for the Tourist" appears on the rear cover. The map is a most attractive and uncommon ephemeral item.
