1866 Across the Continent map, Rocky Mountains, Mormons, Pacific States, Bowles - $175 - (Red Lodge, MT)

1866 "Across the Continent: A Summer's Journey to the Rocky Mountains, the Mormons, and the Pacific States with Speaker Colfax with a full map of all the western Territories and the Route Traveled by Samuel Bowles, Editor of the Springfield (Mass.) Republican." First edition hardback book of 452 plus pages. His trip was made in May and June 1865 and written about in great detail. He returned to the U. S. East Coast by steamship. The significant colored map, one of the handful of personalized maps during the period, is about 14x18 inches. The map is a Colton based map. The map includes the insert of Central California. The map has been removed from the book and laid flat for some time. The map has small miss-folds on the left vertical fold and small tear where the panel was attached to the book. The back side has several archival tape mends to some four corner fold points repair pin holes and along the edges and connection to book point to repair tears. There is very minor map loss at some of the four fold points. The book shows significant wear to the cover including some spine cover loss at the top and bottom of the spine and fading, especially the spine and near the spine. The interior pages are good with some foxing near the front pages and rear pages. Title page has an inch plus tear in the top not affecting any text. There are no other illustrations beyond the map. For shipping the map will be rolled in thick mylar plastic and sent Priority Mail in a tube or box. Seller will pay for packaging, insurance and tracking and will pay for sending the book by separate Media Mail. Questions welcomed.
