GENE BYRON (CANADIAN/ MEXICAN) 1960's MEXICAN MODERNIST TIN & BRASS CONICULAR PAIR of CANDLE HOLDERS, ONE LARGE, ONE SMALLSIGNED 'GB/MEXICO'Mid-Century Modern DIMENSIONS: Large candlestick: 11 ½" Height x 3 ¼" Diameter, Small candlestick: 5" Height x 3 ¼" Diameter Exquisite pair of upright conicular Mexican Modernist candle holders by Gene Byron. This pair is hand-crafted, featuring hammered tin, while being embellished with embossed patterning, from top to bottom, accentuated with brass banding, heavy & sturdy, and weighted with sand. I believe this is supposed to be a graduated set, of which unfortunately the middle size is missing. They are being offered as they were found. This pair is in excellent condition, beautifully aged with natural patina. Both are signed on the bottom Mexico, with Gene Byron conjoint initials 'GB.' Gene Byron was an all around Renaissance woman of her day. Ms. Byron, a Canadian artist moved to De La Palomas, Guanajuato, Mexico in the mid-1950's She restored, refurbished and re-designed an astounding casa with her Spanish husband who was a doctor. Ms. Byron rose to prominence in the 1960's-1970's creating Tin Trivets, with hand-painted tile centers done in the Majolica tradition. The export of her wares to the US was in high demand. She also ventured into tin candelabras, bins, lighting and wall sconces. Today her estate is now a culture museum; hosting many classical and Jazz Concerts, as well as art exhibitions. Both examples of her work and photos of her estate where featured in the famous 'Shipway' Mexican interior design books of the 1960's.
