RARE LIONEL #42 LOCOMOTIVE (SINGLE MOTOR) WITH ORIGINAL BOX (1918) - $1,495 - (Morgan Hill, CA)

For your consideration, a rare "boxed" 1918 example of Lionel's #42 locomotive.  Considering the age (note the date Feb 1917 that clearly appears on the American Railway Express shipping label), this particular locomotive is in exceptional condition (EX or C-7).  Unrestored. Although isolated minute marks, nicks and/or scratches are detectable from the photographs, the fact that it has been safely stored in its original box has ensured its safety and free from damaging elements.  It is a single motored version of the #42 locomotive.  The original box itself is truly a rarity.  Evidently, the Lionel Corporation responded to an order by ensuring the locomotive was securely sealed in its original box and simply affixed a "The Lionel Corporation" address label to the box; from Irvington, NJ, the addressed #42 box was sent to its new owner in St. Louis, MO via American Railway Express, as evidenced by the remnant shipping label and dated Feb 1917 (see photos).  Regarding any markings on the box indicative of a #42 locomotive,  although faintly visible on the box of the box, one can detect the number 42.  The box is solid and square as a brick;  heavy duty in construction (perhaps heavier in material than most component boxes for shipping); the box was carefully opened on one end, maintaining the integrity of the inner and outer flaps (without the need for any repairs); the other end has remained sealed.  Even the cloth tape along the length of the box has had no loss of adhering from the box.  Exceptional.  Not unusual in the world of toy trains for original boxes to meet or exceed the value of the item itself! Additional photographs will be made available upon request; questions are welcome.  For questions feel free to call (408) 710-5575 and ask for Mike; please leave a message if I am unable to answer and I will return your call as soon as possible. Thank you.
