Colombia gold 2 Escudo Doubloon cob 1637 - $5,800 - (Mount Vernon, OH)

Colombia 1637 NR-A gold cob 2 Escudos, Nuevo Reino mint; Philip IV. A nice full cross, mintmark and assayer are visible. NGC Graded VF 30. NGC Certification: 3992481-012. This coin is labeled 1659 by NGC but the coin is actually 1637. To the left of the obverse shield is NR (Nuevo Reino) and beneath that the letter A for assayer Alonso de Anuncibay. Anuncibay’s mark is known on coins dated 1628-1642 even though his official assayer posting was 1632-42. Again, the NGC holder is mislabeled as it lists assayer R instead of the correct assayer A clearly visible at 8 o’clock just to the left of the shield. The date on this specimen is 1637 and is unlisted in Restrepo’s Coins of Colombia 2012, Cayon’s Las Monedas Espanolas, Calico’s Numismatica Espanola. Santa Fe de Bogotá was the principal mint operating in colonial Nuevo Reino and a branch mint operated in Cartagena until 1635. Nuevo Reino de Granada (New Kingdom of Grenada) was the Spanish territories in northern South America which extended into the present day republics of Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica and Venezuela, and even slightly into northern areas of Bolivia and Brazil. Both Santa Fe and Cartagena are in present day Colombia. Cartagena branch mint operated from 1621-22, 1625-35 and for some weeks in 1655. The Jerusalem Cross is a familiar design feature of Spanish coins. The cobs (hand hammered coins) of 17-18th century Spain and Spanish America included the Jerusalem cross on gold coins in more than few variations. The gold 2 escudos, or doubloon, at Cartagena and Santa Fe differed in the design of the cross used on the reverse. The Cartagena 2 escudos have dots or crosses opposite the cross ends and at the intersections of the arcs. (Lasser/Restrepo, The Cob Coinage of Colombia, 2000, p. 71. Daniel Sedwick and Frank Sedwick, The Practical Book of Cobs, 4th edition, 2007, p. 123 mention the same features.) Specifications for cob era Santa Fe 2 escudos are 22 karat gold (0.917) with mass …
