Selling our entire 40 year collection Meiji silver, over 300 examples....... From one of the most important Yokohama firms of the Meiji period Samurai Shokai. Examples in museum collections and major in private ones including the Kahlili collection. Signed Samurai Shokai & "1000-FINE". This is the Japanese designation for PURE SILVER. This was used only by Meiji silversmiths. Many former SAMURAI. The punch bowl in tapering circular form. Double wall construction only found in the meiji silver. Beautifully raised and hand chased iris flowers in exceptionally relief. In some places an inch or more from the surface. Then iris sprays rising from gentle stream. The moving water displayed as series of long sweeping lines. A design technique specific to Meiji arts for centuries. It is Signed "Samurai Shokai Yokohama 1000-FINE. The punch bowl was never monogrammed. The punch bowl 13 1/2 inches across 7 1/2 tall & 118 1/2 standard ounces. In very fine condition. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. Stands firm on table. The raised iris retains its original detail. Double wall construction, hence prone to splits & repairs. A tiny 1/8 inch split edge of a petal, couple pin holes and small solders to innermost crevices of flowers, from manufacture. Interior few tiny dints. Massachusetts residents are subject to sales tax.
