IDED 10 KENTUCKY CAVALRY, WAR OF 1812 SABER USED IN MEXICAN (1847) & CIVIL WARS, 1862/63 This saber was used in the Mexican War & in the Civil War by the Brown family of Hopkins County Kentucky. It was first used in the Mexican War by 2nd Lieutenant John M. Brown who was in the Kentucky Mounted Regiment & was wounded at the Battle of Buena Vista, Mexico on February 26, 1847. It was then used in the Civil War by 1st. Lieutenant Ferris Brown when he served in Company I of the 10th Kentucky (Johnson’s) Cavalry from 1862 to 1863. He fought in skirmishes at Owensboro, Ashbyburg, Slaughterville,(now called Slauters), Geiger’s Lake, Uniontown & Madisonville in Kentucky. He also participated in General John Hunt Morgan’s Christmas Raid into Ohio from December 22, 1862 to the Battle of Buffington Island on July 19, 1863 where he was wounded. He was one of the 300 + Confederate troopers to escape across the Ohio River at Belleville, West Virginia & returned to Hopkins County, Kentucky. He never fought again due to his wound & never surrendered or took the oath of allegiance! This cavalry saber is a composite of parts made from a War of 1812 blade/militia light artillery saber with a locally made pommel cap & an oak grip. It is 36 ¾” with a 31 ¾” very heavy & wide curved blade, brass War of 1812 militia light artillery guard with a pair of langets on either side, what appears to be a locally made brass pommel cap & an oak grip that was never leather wrapped. It is in good & well used condition with the blade still fairly shiny with light pitting & the first 5 3/8” of the tip having medium pitting where it was blood stained & was uncleaned. It comes with a Brown family letter as it was bought directly from the Brown family & a certification of historical accuracy. Kentucky artifacts are quite rare & are seldom seen at Militeria or Civil War shows!
