Lovely & Rare EISUI woodblock print: “THE COURTESAN KISEGAWA OF MATSUBAYA” - $118 - (Colorado Springs, CO)

A Lovely Eisui Portrait of a Courtesan. This is the first time we’ve seen incredible this reprint. It is by Ichirakutei Eisui (Japanese, active 1790-1823), one of the greatest Japanese ukiyo-e artists. He is especially known for his bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. Kisegawa pulls at the red and white tie-dyed collar of her under robe as she fans herself, her lips slightly open. Her hair is piled high atop her head with several decorative hairpins and a soft blue green ribbon, a few loose wisps framing her face. This is an outstanding print. There is beautifully detailed fine line work in her hair, embossing on the fan, all offset by a shimmering white mica background. A terrific beauty subject that we've never seen in reprint before. This print would be a superb choice for any collector. It is truly a classic image from the golden age of ukiyo-e. It was made from meticulously recarved wooden blocks using exactly the same technique – and with the same excellent detail and rich color – as the original. Later edition prints like this make an exciting addition to your collection and are a wonderful way to decorate – at a small fraction of the staggering cost of a first edition print. Matted and framed, this print would make a stunning presentation by itself or as an impressive addition to an arrangement with other prints. It is one you will be proud to display in your home or office and is bound to become a cherished family heirloom. Ichirakutei Eisui is represented in many museums throughout the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the British Museum, London; and the Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia.
