USLHS 1911 Cast Bronze Lighthouse Fog Bell 1000 Pounder E.A.Williams U.S.L.H.S - $8,200 - (Mansfield, MA)
We are fortunate to offer for sale this fine rare relic of maritime history.Found in New Bedford MA. 40+/- years ago this bell has hung in the yard of a private residence since. The bell is marked 1911 United States Light House Service on one side and what looks to be E.A.Williams & Son 1911 Jersey City N.J.on the other,it is worn and hard to read in spots. It measures 28 inches tall by 36 inches wide at the bottom. It is what they call a 1000 pounder. We do not know the exact weight but there is a number stamped on top which is 987 and that could be the weight. It does have some scratches, edge chips and wear. After some research we do believe that the bell is from a lighthouse. It seems to be to heavy for a buoy bell and no lightships seem to fit the timeline. There were however a few lighthouses south of Boston that were removed by the Coast Guard or destoyed in the 1970s when this bell was found. It also was struck on the same side on the outside of the bell which you can see in the pictures. This tells us that it most likely hung on the outer edge of a bell tower and was only accessible from the one side or had a hammer type mechanism striking it.This is just our opinion and we have no solid provenance of the bell. The bell is now on a pallet as you can see in the last few pictures. You are welcome to pick it up or if you want to arrange a freight pick up that is fine too.The bell is at loading dock height. It can be crated for shipment for a small fee. Please look at the pictures for the best description. If you have any other questions about this item please ask.
