1980-1982 Afghanistan War Rug From Soviet Occupation Rare Extreme Quality - $779 - (Corsicana, TX)
This rug measures an impressively large 7' x 3'7" and is a near perfect example of an extremely high quality very early 1980's war rug. The pattern (with a series of small medallions with a jagged white outline) is an old one documented in books about antique rugs. There are similar contemporary designs which originate in Khorrassan around Mashad in eastern Iran. The Iranian iterations of this pattern are red and black, typically with a black field, and the medallions a mix of red, orange and white. This rug has NO visual deficiencies and was selected by me after digging through dozens of war rugs while stationed in Kabul, Afghanistan. I personally paid a fairly large sum of money for this rug (as well as the other war rug I have listed) because I wanted the best. I have seen similar rugs selling for $2750 to $3500 on credible online sites. This is not a mass produced item created for tourists and soldiers with scenes from 9/11 or Taliban and American weapons. This was a "protest" rug created immediately following the Russian invasion of Afghanistan on Christmas Day 1979.
