HANGING OF HENRY PLUMMER, BUCK STINSON & NED RAY AT HANGMAN'S GULCH, JAN. 8TH, 1864, BANNACK, MONTANA TERRITORY Sterling silver souvenir spoon with maker's mark Circa 1890 - 1895 Detailed etching of the hanging of the three men with their coffins at their feet. On spoon handle: Street Scene, Bannack, 1867 - 1868 Finely etched. A very small amount of wear. Details clear. Macabre subject for a souvenir spoon; however, similar to the period's photographic offerings of criminals shot down during efforts to capture them. HENRY PLUMMER, born in Maine in 1832, had a varied life in the American West, acting as a prospector, sheriff, road man, and general outlaw. In 1863, while acting as the sheriff of Bannack, he also "moonlighted" as a road agent, robbing stagecoaches and travellers. Vigilance Committee of Alder Gulch arrested Plummer and two of his gang members -- Buck Stinson and Ned Ray -- after "Dutch John" Wagner grassed out his fellow thieves. On January 8, 1864, Plummer, Stinson and Ray were hanged by the Vigilance Committee. Like what you see?
