He was born in Utrecht and his first signed and dated paintings came out in 1624. They show plates filled with fruits greatly influenced by the Utrecht school. In Antwerp he found his own style and painted still-lives showing tables abundantly loaded with fruits, shellfish, pastries and other edibles.
