ANTIQUE FINE CLASSIC LARGE PAIR OF 19TH C. LOUIS XVI BRONZE 7-ARMS SCONCES - $15,500 - (Aiken, SC)

This magnificent pair of Louis XVI sconces feature a shaped backplate of ā€˜cā€™-scrolls and fronded acanthus centred by a heavily carved torch, issuing seven acanthus cast scrolling arms terminating in circular beaded driptrays and fluted baluster candle sconces. It is wired for electric use. Each of the main arms stand out seven inches from the wall giving a real depth and accent to their host rooms. Made of solid bronze of great weight and delicate 19th C. artisanship. Acquired in Lyon, France. Measurements. 30 in. H x 13 in. W x 7 in. D. Original from Virginia Crawford's Estate in Atlanta, Georgia. This sconces along with the other items of the Crawford collection were acquired in New York by the prestigious designer Ed Kilby, to specially fit her antebellum home designed by architect Moreland Smith. The sconces were depicted in Southern Accents magazine article (see pictures). A Texan turned Buckhead resident, Virginia Crawford, widow of Crawford & Co. founder, James H. Crawford, was an active patroness of the arts and the Atlanta community. In 1997, she was honored as a member of the Forward Arts Foundation at the Atlanta History Center. The renamed Shepherd Center's research institute is now known as the Virginia C. Crawford Research Institute. She retired from the executive committee of Atlanta-based Crawford & Co., the world's largest independent provider of risk and claims management services. (Atlanta Business Chronicle Jul 10, 1998).
