Rare, 3x5 ft., VTG Persian Crewel Embroidery Hanging Tapestry of Hunting Scene - $549 - (Richmond, VA)

This stunningly beautiful hunt scene embroidery was inspired by the hand knotted, antique Safavid Persian carpets of the 16th century, famous for their elaborate colours and artistic designs, and displayed in the collections of great museums worldwide. Hunt scenes such as the one on the tapestry here are sometimes the theme of those treasured, old carpets. In the Safavid era, the Shahs prized the activity of hunting. It was linked to paradise and spiritual activities because the forest is reminiscent of the gardens of paradise. Passages from the Quran were woven into the Safavid carpets and I believe the script embroidered into the border of this textile is also quotations from the Quran. The technique of 100% wool crewel embroidery in a chain stitch for rugs or wall hangings is a traditional art of Persia and typically the embroideries are a floral design. It's rare to find a hunt scene on a crewel embroidered textile. The tapestry offered here has a fully embroidered surface-- every centimeter is covered with chain stitching. The design includes 8 horseback hunters, several birds, animals, trees and flowers, as well as the Quran script embellishment. The tapestry is large-- 3 by 5 feet, plus the two fringed ends. The white, wooden, 44" hanging rod shown in my photos is included, if desired. The backing is a flat weave cotton fabric and it's in very good condition, with only a couple of partly pulled threads. I acquired this tapestry in a fine estate sale and do not know its age. Judging by its beautiful condition, it must be 20th century. No noticeable flaws, wear, or damage. Clean and odor free. Size: 36 x 60 in.
