1861 Confederate T-31 $5 note SCARCE graded CHOICE F. Type T31 CSA currency bill - $539 - (Isabella, MO)
Genuine Confederate paper money T-31 five dollar note of 1861 printed by SBNC, in scarce CHOICE F condition. Up for Sale: This $5 note (Type 31) was printed during the first year of the Civil War by the Southern Bank Note Company (SBNC) for the CSA government in Richmond. This is one in a short series of high-quality engravings produced for the Confederacy by the New Orleans offshoot of the American Bank Note Company (ABNC in New York City) early in the War, when the government still had hard currency to spend, and hope for an early armistice was high. Printed in a relatively tiny quantity (just 58,860 impressions) and circulated heavily (as opposed to the $100 interest-bearing notes, which usually were put aside in a safe place), very few T-31 notes survived in VF or better condition. Most examples today are tattered and in poor condition. For many collectors, finding a nice example in unimpaired FINE condition is the best one can do. The note offered here is a CHOICE example in that grade range. The orange ink (which was laid down first) is vibrant. The entire print impression is sharp. Serial number 7240. Plate letter 'B'. The five graces in the central vignette represent Commerce, Agriculture, Justice, Liberty, and Industry. This heavy banknote paper (unlike many later CSA issues that were forced to use thin, fragile paper) contains red security threads. The note measures approximately 7 x 3 inches (17.5 x 8 cm). The current dean of CSA currency collecting, Pierre Fricke, says the T-31 has been underrated by the paper money collecting community. Collectors would do well to buy the best example they can find, and lay it back for their grandchildren! Condition: Consistent with the grade designation of FINE, the top edge is somewhat frayed. (The right edge has two indentations; the bottom has tiny edge splits; and the left edge looks to be entire.) Three minuscule pinholes are observed to the left of the George Washington statue, but these are barely visible if
