Simpson Hall & Miller 1885 Aesthetic Dragonfly Silverplate Trompe L'Oeil Basket - $675 - (Exeter, CA)
For sale is a mid-1880's 10" tall Aesthetic style silver-plated Tromp L'Oeil basket made by the Simpson, Hall, & Miller Company of Wallingford, Conn. It is in the form of a round, folded, decorated and scalloped basket with applied figural dragonfly, branches, and cherry fruits. It has a rippled arched handle. It has a Quadra plate mark on the base and the shape is No. 51. It appears to be quite heavy and have a weighted bottom. This basket is completely unpolished and left in the "as-found" condition. I make no claims to being an expert in silverplate antiques and consequently the photographs are an essential part of the condition assessment in addition to the written description. I searched the internet extensively and found no other prior sales of this round No. 51 form. I did locate three prior sales of the No. 53 square/rectangular form of this 10" dragonfly figural basket and none for a No. 52 form. Two different No. 53 baskets are posted on Pinterest with no final purchase price and a third sold at Jackson Antiques Auction in 2010 for $1,440 with a pre-auction estimate of $300 to $500. Please feel free to send any reasonable offers.
