Very RARE Unique Stereoscopic Image Ca. 1884Associated to Legendary Thurber, Texas - Historic Ghost Town with Ties to Col. Robert D. Hunter & Edgar Lewis Marston - Former Presidents of the Texas & Pacific Coal Co.Produced by the Noted 19th Century Photographic Studio of Boehl & Koenig, of St. Louis, MOMeasures Approximately 4" x 7" inches Offering this very enigmatic, possibly one-of-a-kind stereoscopic photograph which features the beautifully decorated drawing room at the residence of Colonel Robert D. Hunter, shown on the morning of the wedding of his daughter Jennifer Colorado to Edgar Lewis Marston in June, 1884. Colonel Hunter was president of the Texas and Pacific Coal Company, which claimed ownership of Thurber, Texas (was succeeded by Marston in 1889). Between 1888 and 1921, Thurber was one of the largest producers of bituminous coal in Texas, and the largest company town in the state. Mining operations were unionized in 1903, and Thurber became the first "closed shop" town in the country. By 1920, conversion of locomotives from coal to oil reduced demands and lowered prices, and miners left the area throughout the 1920's, making Thurber one of Texas's most prominent ghost towns.
