Miriam Schapiro (1923 - 2015) In 1994 Miriam Schapiro created three editions during several visits to Berghoff-Cowden Editions. Each edition represented a variation on one of her design themes and incorporated fabric as collage or printed detail. Due to their complexity these prints were completed over several years. “Alexandra and Me” represents one of many subjective themes that Miriam developed throughout her career. She identified with Russian Avant Garde artist Alexandra Exter who also founded many artist movements in her lifetime. Schapiro was one of the leaders of the pattern and decoration movement as well as the feminist art movement of the 1970’s. She has received four honorary doctoral degrees, a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Rockefeller Foundation Grant. Her work is in many public and private collections including the National Gallery of Art, the Whitney Museum of Art, the Hirshhorn Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Ludwig Museum of Aachen, Germany and the Australian National Museum in Canberra.
