Struck on U.S. soil at the Philadelphia Mint and containing 90% Silver, this 1904 Panama 50 Centesimos is a stunningly designed and nicely preserved! In 1903 Panama declared their independence and decided to switch its monetary system from the Columbian Peso to a new nationalized yet more internationally accepted form of currency. The first 50 Centesimos was struck in 1904, the same year construction began on the Panama Canal, but was not issued to the public until the following year. Later, 55% of 1904 50 Centesimos ever minted were melted down to garner enough silver to produce the 1931 Panama Balboa (considered by the staff at the Philadelphia Mint to be one of the most beautiful coins ever they produced).
