Newman CollectionThe Drovers Hotel was a prominent establishment in the city of St. Louis during the Civil War. Reflecting the city's ties to the Western frontier and cattlemen, a steer's head is prominently located in the center of the obverse die used to strike all of the known varieties. It being a border state and outside the main channels of commerce, only four merchants issued Civil War tokens in the state of Missouri. These tokens were supplied from Cincinnati and the Stanton shop produced the Drovers Hotel tokens.There are seven different die combinations known for the Drovers Hotel. The most common variety is very scarce and most varieties are rare. Every die combination was struck in copper. Brass, copper-nickel, and tin plated examples can be obtained for a few die combinations, but all are extremely rare. Most Drovers Hotel tokens have plain edges, but one die combination is found with reeded edges for copper and brass examples. In total, there are thirteen token varieties for this merchant.This is a superb uncirculated example of the -2a variety which combines the obverse die with the 1009 indian head die. This token was produced early in the Civil War utilizing one of only four indian head dies with the 1862 date. NGC has assigned a grade of MS-64 BN which ties it with one other specimen for finest known for this variety in the NGC census. This token possesses rich and uniform medium brown color with hints of red, a virtually full strike, and satin luster. It was previously in the collection of Eric P.
