Just two overdates are known in the entire double eagle series, the other is 1853/2. This is one of a few known overdates created during the 20th century, and it is popular for its easy identification. In fact, this is one of very few overdate coins that can be seen without magnification. Edgar H. Adams was the first to discover this variety in 1910, but interest remained dormant until its "rediscovery" in 1943. In all grades, the overdate is actually scarcer than the normal Philadelphia Mint double eagle of this date, although the Mint State populations tend to be about the same for both varieties.
