Art Deco Sterling Silver 14K Pin Stripe Dance Purse James E. Blake - Mississippi - $250 - (Jackson, MS)
This is a beautiful Art Deco Flapper's "dance purse" or coin compact wrist-let. It is a solid sterling silver with 14k gold inlay pin strips and diamond car-touche for the monogram. On the inside there are four spring loaded coin holder slots on one side with a mirrored compartment that I believe held matches. The other side has a hinged spring arm to hold bills or currency securely inside and this side appears to be gold washed. The bill holder arm is stamped EBJCo for the James E. Blake Co. and also has the number 2238. The lip of the inside at the catch is stamped Sterling & 14K and EJBCo. The frame of the mirror is stamped Pat. Applied For. It has the original sterling silver chain that would make it a wrist-let. The purse measures 4" by 3" and weighs 4.07ozt or 148.6 grams. This unique and early Art Deco purse is monogrammed on the outside with the name of Sudie McLaurin Brandon, Miss. Sudie married into the prominent McLaurin family from Brandon, MS. Anselm J. McLaurin, was the thirty-fourth governor of Mississippi and served between 1896-1900. This purse is in lovely antique condition with only normal outside wear. There are a few dings to the front and several on the back, but nothing major. The front of the purse is monogrammed Sudie McLaurin Brandon, Miss. The purse opens easily and closes securely. There are four spring loaded coin slots and a hinged bill holder on the opposite side, all are in good working order. There is also a mirrored compartment that I believe holds matches. It has the original sterling silver chain making it a wrist-let. This purse will be shipped in a small flat rate box with a signature confirmation required.
