FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT. Typed letter signed by “Franklin D. Roosevelt” as President to “Emil Hurja” on official White House stationery. Hurja was a pioneer of political opinion polling who advised the president on social and economic reform issues. TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT AS PRESIDENT TO HIS SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC ADVISOR REGARDING HIS FAMILY HISTORY President Roosevelt is thrilled that archives related to his family descendants is located in the Nicholas Low papers at the Library of Congress. The letter reads in full: “I am thrilled by those early Roosevelt items from the Nicholas Low papers. I did not know that you had acquired the latter and they must be a veritable gold mine. Ever so many thanks. I have been delighted to sign the “Looking Forward” and the pamphlets.”. Low was a well-known merchant, financier, and land speculator from New York City who developed properties in the upstate; in addition, he was a state legislator who served in the state’s assembly and attended the state’s 1788 convention that ratified the United States Convention. “I AM THRILLED BY THOSE EARLY ROOSEVELT ITEMS FROM THE NICHOLAS LOW PAPERS. I DID NOT KNOW THAT YOU HAD ACQUIRED THE LATTER AND THEY MUST BE A VERITABLE GOLD MINE” The letter is one page, measures 9” by 7”, was written in Washington, DC on April 8, 1938, and is in the finest condition I have seen a letter from a president on White House stationery with only two small and faint pencil annotations on the verso. Two similar letters from Roosevelt to Hurja sold for $764 at Skinner Auctioneers and Appraisers in October of 2005 and $625 at Doyle Auctions in April of 2014. The volume referenced in this letter sold for $2,693 at RR Auction in March of 2010.
