As the printing plates for this new note were being prepared for the Dominion of Canada government by the American Banknote Company in 1896 or early 1897, a few samples of the face design were produced. These proofs were usually used to gain final approvals from the government to print the series of notes for circulation. The notes have been independently third party certified by Paper Money Guarantee Corporation (PMG) as "Choice Uncirculated 64."
