Rudolf Uffrecht sculptor-Lord Byron Terracotta Bust, c1877 Charcoal Brown finish - $125 - (Dixon, IL)
This 10 1/2" tall bust of Lord Byron is incised on the back "R Uffrecht mod-deponirt 1877" in script writing. Inside circle base are incised marks of U&C 786. On the front below the bust and above the pedestal is BYRON in raised letters. This bust of Lord Byron, the young, famous and flamboyant British poet and politician, George Gordon Byron (1788-1824), was created by the German sculptor Rudolf Uffrecht (1840-1906) in terracotta with a charcoal brown finish. Uffrecht did many busts of famous European and American people in terracotta. It has a few dots of scraped paint in the hair and on the tip of nose and some scratches of the paint on the circular pedestal. Many are not deep enough to reveal the terracotta. Inside the pedestal is a large chip into the terracotta with cracking, but this does not affect the stability of the pedestal and seen from the outside, it is merely a small dot of paint loss. It measures 10 1/4" tall x 7" wide x 5" front to back. A very nice addition to any sculpture collection or library. I will provide any further photos on request.
