1870's-1890's POLITICAL OR BANNER MAN TINTYPE W/ "CLARKS FOR...OTS & S.." ON HAT - $950 - (Lampeter, PA)
This original circa 1870's-1890's political campaign or banner man advertisement tintype of a man holding ballots or ad flyers. The man is wearing a fancy white coat with tails & a white top hat. In one hand he is holding what looks like a stack of paper ballots or ad flyers & in the other hand he is holding one of the ballots or ad flyers. His white top hat has the wording "CLARKS FOR....OTS &....S....". The lettering that we can read is quite sharp & distinct on the top hat. But, we are not able to read some of the other letters that twist around the sides of the hat. The wording on his hat reads backwards as would be expected with wording on most tintypes. The woman standing next to the man holds a card with a scalloped edge but she gives no clue of her connection with the man's campaign? or advertising promotion? This rare & unusual tintype, which has been in our collection for a few decades, was found many years ago in a Lancaster County, Pa. estate. The size is 3 3/8 inches long by 2 7/16 inches wide. A sharp & clear image. A 1/8 inch wide strip along the bottom edge shows some slightly raised (but totally stable) emulsion & a scratch. Otherwise, the tintype is in exceptionally pleasing & mostly smooth condition. The jagged strip along the surface at the right border occurred in the emulsion during the making. There has been no loss to the emulsion after the tintype was made. Quite a rare & unusual tintype! Please examine the clear photos that we have provided & purchase based on your own opinion as to the condition. Our inventory number of this item is #7287.
