Civil War Sutler Token for Wm. Vanderbeek, Sutler for the 158th New York VolunteersIrons NY-158-15B (brass) R-9 NGC MS-66 ex Steve Tanenbaum and Finest Known Vanderbeek tokenWilliam Vanderbeek was the sutler for the 158th NY Volunteers. Most of his tokens were struck in brass and he obtained his tokens from the Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury, Connecticut. The tokens were struck in 5, 10, 15, 25, and 50-cent denominations and all of the tokens have blank reverses. The 15-cent and 25-cent denominations are the rarest varieties struck in brass. Both tokens are rated R-9 with estimated surviving populations of 2-4 tokens each. This is a phenomenal Civil War Sutler token. Not only is it the highest graded Vanderbeek token in the NGC Census, it is also one of only nine sutler tokens of any variety to be graded MS-66 and only one other brass sutler token has been graded MS-66. It is impossible to capture the true quality of this token in photos. The obverse is simply too reflective. This is the highest quality brass token that we have ever seen. It is fully brilliant with a sharp strike and cartwheel luster. This sutler token was previously in the collection of Steve Tanenbaum as noted on the NGC slab label. This token will be delivered fully insured by registered mail.
